Papers: Dalglish wants Liverpool job

- 0

Kenny Dalglish was charged by the Liverpool hierarchy with the task of finding the club's next manager - someone with experience, talent and a sense of what it means to be the main man at Anfield.

Well it seems that 'King Kenny' has found the man who ticks all the boxes - and it just so happens to be himself!

Pretty much all the papers are reporting that the Scot has told Anfield bosses that he wishes to be considered for the job.

To be fair to Dalglish, his play for the job he gave up 19 years ago for stress reasons is not one based upon ego.

However, he has not had any managerial experience since A1 were one of the biggest bands in Britain - Celtic in 2000, in case you were wondering. That might work against him, with the Daily Mirror claiming that Roy Hodgson is still the front runner for the position and could even be officially approached within the next 48 hours.

Fulham would look for £2.5 million in compensation for their manager but Liverpool might be able to afford that now that Internazionale are about to appoint Rafael Benitez, as under the terms of the Spaniard's severance package he surrenders future payments as soon as he takes a new job - meaning the Reds will be out of pocket for less than £3m and not the £6m widely reported at the time of his departure. Also in all the papers is the news that Chelsea have released Joe Cole and Michael Ballack after the club decided to reject the pair's pay demands.

It is rather funny to see many of the rags claim this as an 'exclusive'; but the race will now be on to see who can first correctly guess the next destinations of the duo.

Arsenal, Tottenham, Manchester United and Liverpool are all interested in Cole (The Independent) while Michael Ballack has emerged as a shock target of Real Madrid (Daily Mail).

On Tuesday, Paper Round was emailed by the Eurosport Germany office with a flimsy German internet story linking Bayern Munich midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger with Chelsea.

Our friends in Munich wanted to know if there was anything in the British papers about the rumour; we said no - but one of them has picked up the 'story' today and passed it off as their own. The lazy rag in question? The Daily Star, who claim the Blues are preparing a £25m bid for the player nicknamed 'Piggy'.

Robinho's 'representatives' will next week tell the bigwigs at Eastlands that their man will not play for Manchester City again under Roberto Mancini. Nice of them to tell the Mail first though.

Arsenal defender William Gallas has been linked with a move to Greek giants Panathinaikos. (Mirror)

A host of clubs want Martin Petrov after his release from Manchester City on Tuesday, but according to the Mirror, it is Aston Villa who are leading the chase ahead of Everton, Stoke, West Ham and Bolton.

Fulham boss Hodgson seems to be busy for a man who is all set to jump ship to Liverpool. He signed Philippe Senderos from Arsenal on Tuesday and is now looking to seal the £8m capture of Standard Liege and Congo striker Dieumerci Mbonkani. Fulham's francophile fans will be saying 'Thank You God' if that signing goes through.

Liverpool's meagre coffers could be boosted to the tune of £3.5m if they sell Emiliano Insua to Fiorentina. (Mail)

Tottenham are heavily chasing Ipswich's England U17 international Connor Wickham to such an extent that they are considering an £8m offer. (Mail)

West Ham have had a £2m bid for Nice defender Onyekachi Apam turned down - they will have to pay double that to get the Nigerian. (Independent)

Blackburn are after the £6m-rated Bordeaux midfielder Alou Diarra (Independent) and plan a £4m move for Stoke City's Tuncay (Mirror) but they will face competition from Sunderland for the former.

Finally, Blackpool are looking to sign Wolves striker Sylvan Ebanks-Blake next season, despite the fact that the 24-year-old managed just two goals in 2009-10. (Mail)
